Life is good for ad man Ruben Guthrie - he leads a party boy lifestyle, has a model fiancée and lives in a house on the water. He's at the top of his game, until some drunken skylarking lands Ruben at the bottom of his infinity pool, lucky to be alive. Patrick Brammall - Ruben

Patrick is best known for his roles in OFFSPRING and UPPER MIDDLE BOGAN, and was most recently seen in the feature film THE LITTLE DEATH, which premiered at the 2014 Sydney Film Festival and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. His performance in the film saw him nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Award at the 2015 AACTA Awards.

Alex Dimitriades - Damian

Alex made his acting debut with the hit feature film, THE HEARTBREAK KID, followed by an outstanding turn in HEAD ON, which earned him his first AFI Best Actor nomination in 1998 and a Film Critics Circle of Australia win for Best Actor. Other memorable film performances over the years include LA SPAGNOLA, THREE BLIND MICE, GHOST SHIP, DEUCE BIGALOW, KINGS OF MYKONOS, SUMMER CODA and THE INFINITE MAN.

Abbey Lee - Zoya

Prior to filming RUBEN GUTHRIE, Abbey completed shooting on the epic fantasy film GODS OF EGYPT alongside Gerard Butler and Geoffrey Rush, and is currently filming the Nicolas Winding Refn directed thriller film THE NEON DEMON alongside Elle Fanning and Keanu Reeves. Abbey's first feature film role was alongside Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in George Miller's post-apocalyptic film MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.

Harriet Dyer - Virginia

For her role in LOVE CHILD, Harriet has received two 2015 Logie Award nominations, the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding Newcomer and Most Popular New Talent. Her other television credits include roles in JANET KING, the comedy A MOODY CHRISTMAS, MICRO NATION, and PACKED TO THE RAFTERS. She also made her Broadway debut in PETER PAN at New York's New Victory Theatre.

Brenton Thwaites - Chet

After a string of successful roles in Australia, Brenton has featured in international films like THE SIGNAL with Laurence Fishburne, THE GIVER alongside Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep, the Australian crime thriller SON OF A GUN with Ewan McGregor, and he starred as Prince Phillip alongside Angelina Jolie in the Disney fantasy film MALEFICENT. Brenton is currently in production on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES alongside Johnny Depp.

Robyn Nevin - Susan

Robyn is an award-winning actress, director and producer. She has starred in many of Australia's most important films, including THE EYE OF THE STORM with Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis and Charlotte Rampling, Jane Campion's TOP OF THE LAKE, and she appeared in the highly successful MATRIX films. She is also a member of the Order of Australia for her contribution to theatre in Australia.

Jack Thompson - Peter

One of Australia's most loved and respected actors, Jack Thompson has appeared in numerous Australian and American films including the classic SUNDAY TOO FAR AWAY, THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH, and BREAKER MORANT, which won him an Australian Film Institute award for Best Actor in a leading role, and the award for Best Supporting Actor at the Cannes International Film Festival.


Brendan Cowell is a writer, director and actor working in theatre, film and television. RUBEN GUTHRIE is based on Brendan's play of the same name, which was first staged in 2009 at Sydney's Belvoir Street Theatre to a sell-out season, and then re-staged around the world.

Some of Brendan's credits include: 2012 AACTA best screenplay award for the TV series THE SLAP, writer of the feature film SAVE YOUR LEGS (in which he also starred), writer of the TV series LOVE MY WAY, his novel HOW IT FEELS, and writer of ten original stage plays that have been produced worldwide and have won several national awards.

RUBEN GUTHRIE is Brendan's feature debut.


Kath is the award-winning producer of many celebrated films - most notably SAMSON & DELILAH, which won the prestigious Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009. She has also produced THE DARKSIDE, a hybrid documentary-drama with Warwick Thornton, ABC TV feature documentary TENDER, and two chapters of THE TURNING with Warwick Thornton and actress Mia Wasikowska.
